Mozilla’s top executive, Asa Dotzle, has given us early details of the Firefox OS tablet. Foxconn builds and it’s called the Infocus Tab F1 and it is intended for the entry-level market.
Infocus plans to sell the device for $150 and for the price, users could get 1GHz Allwinner ARM Cortex-A7 quad-core processor, 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) IPS display, PowerVT SGX544MP2 GPU, 32GB of internal storage ad 2GB of RAM. The microSD card slot could provide up to 32GB of removable storage. Front- and rear-facing cameras weigh in at 2Mp and 5Mp, respectively. The 7000mAh battery on the back is able to power the entire package for an entire day.
Measuring at 9.7mm thick, the tablet supports only WiFi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity. Dotzler didn’t give any additional information about possible pricing and launch date; but Mozilla is still working to get the tablet priced under $100. Overall, the device seems to have rather modest hardware spec, but the lightweight operating system should provide acceptable experience despite the relatively limited resources. The tablet may also compete well against Tesco Hudl in the UK.
We have received on Foxconn’s involvement in this project since last summer. The company consequently gathered 3,000 engineers to work on Mozilla’s tablet platform.
