Sources familiar with the upstream supply chain recently revealed that Google has a plan to ditch its affordable 7-inch Nexus 7 models in favor of the bigger Nexus 8. Supposedly, the company finds that the demand for its 7-inch tablet is weaker than expected.
The market segment is clearly the most competitive in the tablet space and this is the reason why Google has set its sight on the 8-inch arena. It is not too clear the moment; but Asus may still retain orders for Google’s Nexus 8 tablet. In addition, sources also tell us that the new tablet will be powered by low-power Intel Bay Trail-T processor; but Qualcomm’s platforms are not out of the running.
The 7-inch tablet market is currently occupied by Samsung Galaxy Tab, Amazon Kindle Fire, Nexus 7 and countless cheap offerings we find in UK retailers, including Tesco and Asda. Although the competition is supposed lighter in the 8-inch market, Google will confront a tough competitor, the Retina-capable Apple iPad Mini.
There are also Samsung Galaxy Tab 8, LG G Pad 8.3 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. Again, this is just a rumor; but the possibility that Google is planning this, isn’t really out of the realm of possibility.
